Gangaram - Mumbai Mobile Creches

Gangaram is the eldest of seven children of a migrant family from Andhra Pradesh. His struggle to beat the odds began when Mumbai Mobile Creches teachers insisted he be sent to school when he was five years old.

His father, a construction labourer, didn’t want to spend any money on education, but his mother encouraged him to go to school. When he was older, a lady whom Gangaram ran errands for paid his fees to train in shipping. He also won scholarships from the Rotary Club for a diploma in mechanical engineering.

At 26, Gangaram now single-handedly supports his family by working as an Able Body Seaman in the Dockendale Shipping Company earning £650/month
