Since its inception The Trust has worked with South Asian NGOs to touch the lives of one million disadvantaged people by tackling various issues including mental health, child abuse and providing business qualifications for illiterate rural women.

The Prince also announced the members of the British Asian Trust’s new in-country Advisory Councils including the Chairman of the India Advisory Council, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Managing Director and Chairman of Reliance Industries, the largest private sector firm in India. The Advisory Councils will provide the British Asian Trust with further in-country insight and further assist with their rigorous selection of future projects.

In the words of my late father Mohamed Aly Rangoonwala, “giving is an art” so like anything in life, if you are not a natural then you have to work at it.

The one advantage I had was that money was not an issue; but it had to be spent where there would be results. Today, among other social initiatives, our own Rangoonwala Foundation is now reaching out to 150,000 students with over 60 educational courses at several centres.

The Trust’s newest Ambassador, Sonali also co-presents ‘British Olympic Dreams’. During her time at the BBC, Sonali has covered the Commonwealth Games, the Cricket World Cup, the Boat Race, the London Marathon, the Epsom Derby, the Royal Wedding and Wimbledon. All this was on top of her day job – the BAFTA award-winning ‘Newsround’ which she presented for five years.

By the time he was 17, run-ins with the police were a direct consequence of Javad’s ‘work’. But after seven weeks of football coaching and employability skills workshops at Street League in North London, Javad feels like he has a new lease on life. Street League is a Trust charity partner.

National press wires reported eight people dead in bloody street battles across Karachi in the first 45 minutes of a news reporting workshop I conducted recently with students of Mehran School in Orangi. Run by Trust charity partner Developments in Literacy, the school operates in Asia’s largest, most violent slum, where the guns and drugs culture make getting an education a daily challenge.

A senior police officer here admitted that the police are not equipped to count or document the targeted political killings or random revenge killings.
