On track for the Bupa 10,000 run on 27th May in London are runners Ahmad Riaz and Raphael Zak who are racing to transform the lives of disadvantaged people in South Asia.

Starting and finishing on the Mall, our runners will traverse the course likely to be used in the 2012 Olympics Marathon.

“I decided to run this year’s BUPA 10K to support some of the most deprived communities in South Asia,” said runner Ahmad Riaz. “The British Asian Trust and its charity partners are doing some wonderful work in the Indian sub-continent as well as in UK to bring lasting change to the lives of poor people through access to education, health and livelihoods,” he said. Ahmad is particularly impressed with the work of Trust charity partner Katha. “Katha works in the Delhi slums to ensure that children get a high quality education to overcome poverty for themselves, their families and their communities,” he said.

You can support Ahmad by visiting his Just Giving charity page here.

Raphael Zak said he feels honoured to run for The British Asian Trust. “I was keen to support The British Asian Trust after hearing about the life changing work they do across South Asia,” said Raphael. “ Every penny donated is channelled into worthwhile projects and even small donations go far in helping people to work their way out of poverty. I look forward to my contribution towards helping to make a difference.”

Support Raphael by visiting his JustGiving charity page here.

Sukhi Vig, Trust events manager said: “We would like to thank Ahmad and Raphael for choosing to run to raise funds for our life-changing work. We appreciate your efforts on our behalf. Good luck and best wishes for 27th May.”

Inspired by the spirit and work ethic of Mumbai’s slum children, UK students will have the chance to journey through the colourful world of Mumbai via an education pack being developed by The British Asian Trust and The Sharma Foundation.

UK schoolchildren will share slum children’s experiences and lifestyles through the pack; and learn new skills through lessons influenced by their international counterparts. They can then apply their new-found skills to help raise funds for the very children they are learning about. The aim is to create an invaluable, interdependent relationship.

An innovative enterprise project will be included allowing children to consolidate their learning and participate in a competition to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and talents. The education pack is set to be piloted in schools nationwide from September 2012.

“Every young adult can be a cog in the wheel to build a better world than the one they have inherited,” said Seema Sharma, Entrepreneur and Founder of The Sharma Foundation. “The resource we are developing is as much about personal fulfillment and personal growth for each child here in the UK, as it is about raising funds and awareness for the plight of children living in poverty,” she said.

This is a project for children, developed and inspired by children, said Abha Thorat-Shah, Director of the British Asian Trust. “By showcasing the enterprise and resilience of the communities and children we support, we hope that children in the UK are inspired to change their own lives and support those in circumstances which are more difficult than theirs.”

For information or to involve your school in the pilot project please contact the Project Manager on anna@britishasiantrust.org.
