Top US Official Learns Lessons from Mann Deshi School

Founder and Chair of Trust Charity Partner Mann Deshi, Chetna Sinha, describes a visit from America’s Under Secretary for International Affairs to view the work of her organisation.

I am glad to share with you that on 2 March, Lael Brainard, US Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs visited the Mann Deshi organisation. The trip was a follow-up to my meeting with US President Barack Obama last November in Mumbai.

The objective of the visit was to learn more about the innovative work Mann Deshi is spearheading in rural India. Anil Kakani, Senior Advisor, India; Russell Green, Financial Attaché (based in the US Embassy in Delhi); Paige Gebhardt, Special Assistant to the Under Secretary; and Ann Doyle, Director, Strategic Initiative, accompanied Lael Brainard.During her day-long visit, The Under Secretary travelled to Ramnagar Village where she talked with women about Mann Deshi’s savings and loans, and visited the mobile business school. She went to a vegetable market where Mann Deshi entrepreneurs were at work.

She met Mann Deshi beneficiaries in the head office and held a roundtable discussion with our executive team.Under Secretary Brainard is the highest ranking woman ever to serve at the US Treasury Department, and the  US economic deputy to the G20, World Bank and International Monetary Fund. She said that Mann Deshi’s projects provided role models that could be replicated in America.

“Certain economical issues are common between the US and India. The way micro-financing is being routed in rural areas is interesting and we would see if similar technology, with some changes, could be implemented in the US,” the Under Secretary said.Mann Deshi was honoured by the visit and hopes that it will open doors to further cooperation.
