As part of the run-up to the Royal Wedding, BBC Local Radio Asian Programmes asked Hitan Mehta, Executive Director of The British Asian Trust, and others: ‘Is the Monarchy is a good thing and what does it mean for British Asians?’
“The Monarchy gives a sense of continuity to the country,” said Hitan Mehta. “While there is political change, governments change and prime ministers change, the one thing that has remained constant is the Monarchy,” he told BBC’s Ruchi Tandon.
“I believe the Royal family being out there on the international level makes a huge amount of difference. They are able to highlight charitable issues all across the globe whether it be disaster relief work all the way through the kinds of work The British Asian Trust does. They are a great set of ambassadors,” he said during the recent interview.
“I think with the ties that people have with South Asia, many of us feel a part of the community here. And part and parcel of that community is the Royal Family and the Monarchy.”
The interview is available on Desi Download aired on 20 April 2011. Fast forward to 18:40 minutes for Hitan Mehta’s interview. Desi Download is a pick of the week from BBC Local Radio Asian community programmes including news, views and a celebration of the cultural life of Asian people across England, all told in their own words.
