Geeta Dharmarajan, founder of Trust charity partner Katha, was awarded the Padma Shri - India’s 4th highest civilian honour - for her distinguished service in the field of Literature and Education.
Geeta’s efforts to further education and reduce poverty have brought change and introduced the joy of reading to 8 million women and children in slums and tribal villages.
“It’s a great honour for me, Katha and all our children. This award is all Katha- staff, child, community woman,” said Geeta Dharmarajan.
A writer, editor and educator, Geeta’s belief that good literature is an effective medium for both pleasure and self improvement, led her to establish Katha in 1989. Her deep interest in social work in education led to the development of a special story-based pedagogy and curriculum for children coming from poor communities.
Geeta has 31 books and over 400 published pieces to her credit. Her innovative, award-winning work is geared to uniting India’s different language communities. She views translation as a means of fostering unity, reinforcing diversity and offering the illiterate equity and the opportunity to participate in lifelong learning.
