Children’s day care centres are not on the itinerary of most delegations to India, but the pioneering work of Trust partner Mumbai Mobile Crèches (MMC) drew representatives from the offices of the Lord Mayor of London, London Stock Exchange, Indian High Commission and the country’s leading financial services firm.
MMC runs day centres for the children of migrant labourers living on construction sites. The charity has reached out to over 150,000 children with education and health services since 1972.
Staff and children at MMC’s Agridpada Centre enjoyed the recent visit from Claire Anstee, Lady Mayoress of the City of London; Marjorie Gibson-Smith, wife of the Chairman of the London Stock Exchange; and Jill Beckingham, wife of the Deputy High Commissioner, Mumbai.
The Trust’s co-funder for MMC, EdelGive, the philanthropic foundation of Edelweiss, was represented by Aditi Thorat, Chief Operating Officer, and Shabnam Panjwani, Head of Marketing and Communications.
The British contingent was participating in an annual visit by the Lord Mayor which aims to strengthen trading and investment links between India and the UK. Delegates also included British Asian Trust Trustee Salman Mahdi.
MMC Chief Executive Officer Vrishali Pispati said: “It was wonderful to be able to showcase the importance of the work we do for children who might not otherwise have access to education, health care or even just a safe space. The children were all very excited to share what they have learned with our guests.”
Funding from The British Asian Trust and EdelGive will enable Mumbai Mobile Crèches to reach its target of helping 7,000 more children on construction sites by 2011.
