Your Vote Can Change Women’s Lives in Rural India

Bipashu BasuChetna Sinha, founder of Trust charity partner Mann Deshi School, is a finalist in an international competition that could bring a $50,000 grant to further the organisation’s pioneering work. The Property Rights Competition recognises efforts to improve the lives of poor people and transform communities through secure rights to land.Voting is open until 12 January 2011 for the competition featuring 19 finalists from nine countries. Vote for Chetna Sinha here. The competition, sponsored by Ashoka’s Changemakers and the Omidyar Network, drew 219 entries from 47 countries.

“I am excited to share my work in empowering rural women by setting up a series of banks for them, getting corporate help, and setting up a business school for them,” said Chetna Sinha.

Bipashu Basu“The 19 semi-finalists demonstrate innovative approaches that help to provide land to the landless, formalise and document property rights for individuals or communities who lack established rights, or work on legal education to help people understand and benefit from the laws that protect these assets. “The Property Rights competition has brought forth groundbreaking ideas from all over the world—all which have the potential to create economic and social impact through secure property rights,” said Diana Wells, President of Ashoka.

The three winners of the Property Rights competition will be announced on February 23, 2011.
