On World Mental Health Day 2011, The British Asian Trust paid tribute to the work of two pioneering charity partners in the mental health sector. The Aman Foundation, a human development trust in Pakistan focusing on health care, education and skills, and nutrition; and UK-based BasicNeeds whose low-cost, community-based mental health strategies are making great strides in 10 countries, were recognised by The British Asian Trust.
In partnership with the Aman Foundation and BasicNeeds, the Trust is planning to enter the mental health arena in Pakistan to introduce community-based care to enable mentally ill people to live and work successfully in their own towns and villages. The initiative will address the scarcity of effective mental health services, said Trust Programme Manager Rabia Nusrat.
Trust President and founder HRH The Prince of Wales applauded the ground-breaking initiative in a recent speech: “I am hopeful that during the coming year we will be able to work with organizations such as the Aman Foundation in Pakistan, which has most generously pledged its support to look specifically at the issue of mental health so that we can assist those who are suffering, encouraging them, once again, to become full participants in their communities,” he said.
World Mental Health Day, October 10, is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy.
