Key Facts

  • Poverty remains entrenched in the North and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, known as ‘The Conflict Region’ after 20 years of war.
  • The North and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka were hard hit by the 2004 tsunami which killed some 35,000 people, destroyed 80,000 households and displaced 1 million people.
  • Poverty in the North and Eastern provinces is linked to lack of livelihoods, employment , infrastructure and education.

Charities’ response

The Voluntary Organization for Vulnerable Community Development (VOVCD) provides training and support for livelihoods in fishing, shoe-making , collective businesses and other areas. Capacity-building initiatives offer business counselling, business promotion, cash management, book-keeping and leadership programmes.

The Organization for Elangai Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR) provides support for war and tsunami-affected communities to maximise efficiency in farming and fishing to promote local economic activities and income-generating initiatives.
