Key Facts

  • Known as “the land of death,” Rajastan’s Thar desert region is characterised by scorching temperatures, low rainfall, salty groundwater and sparse vegetation. Life is an endless struggle for water.
  • Rural women spend one-third of their lives collecting water covering a distance three times around the globe. Children forego education to help collect water.
  • The region - the most densely populated desert in the world - is especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Wells for India and The Jal Bhagirathi Foundation’s Responses

Wells for India, a UK charity, works in partnership with local organisations in Rajasthan to support village projects for water harvesting and long-term improvement of water supplies. The Jal Bhagirathi Foundation (JBF) mobilises communities at grassroots level to develop and manage ecological resources, especially water, in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert. Headed by HH Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur and Shri, the Foundation promotes traditional water harvesting systems and local strategies for adapting to climate change.

Our Support

Support from The Princes’ Charities’ will enable Wells for India and the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation to develop two model villages in the Thar Desert to showcase traditional water management practices for adapting to climate change. The villages will also be developed as models for demonstrating best practice in waste water and solid waste management.
