Event

We were honoured to have been chosen as Barclays’ preferred charity for their Embrace Gala Dinner at the end of November this year. It was the perfect opportunity for partnering to fundraise for our Livelihoods work with a focus on women’s economic empowerment as well as enjoying a night of insightful discussions and lively entertainment!

Embrace, Barclays’ global Multicultural Network, is dedicated to championing Barclays’ ambition to be inclusive of people from all backgrounds, faiths and geographies. The Gala celebrated multiculturalism with a panel discussion led by the British Asian Trust’s Founders Circle member, Lord Jitesh Gadhia, and included ambassadors Laila Rouass, and Asad Ahmad, as well as broadcaster and actor Eddie Nestor and Matt Hammerstein from Barclays. The discussion furthered Barclays’ Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) agenda by encouraging more dialogue and understanding of the often-uncomfortable subject of race in the work place, through the panel members’ own personal journeys and experiences.

The evening comprising of 300 corporates, clients and Barclays senior team was superbly hosted by our ambassador, Sonali Shah, and ended with everyone on their feet, dancing to the tunes of another British Asian Trust ambassador, Navin Kundra.

The evening raised vital funds for our Women’s Economic Empowerment programme in South Asia. Only 28% of women in South Asia have a job or are looking for one, the second lowest rate in the world. The funds collected will contribute towards eradicating the systemic barriers faced by women looking to engage in sustainable employment through education, training, enterprise development and access to finance. Key to our approach is engaging corporates and other employers to create environments which enable women to enter, remain, and be successful in the work place.

Women’s economic empowerment and economic inclusion is a key objective underpinning our work to tackle poverty in South Asia, and we are pleased to have shared our vision with Barclays.
